Production Optimization

Gruvön paper mill is one of the world's most complex paper mills. In order to get more paper output while saving on chemical consumption, ABB Industry Solution developed an on-line optimizer that optimizes the entire Gruvön mill. The Optimizer is the first to succeed in optimizing such a big problem in real time. The solution is based on Microsoft.net with a variety of products, making it easy to adapt to new areas and processes. Included are also tools for planning downtime, locating fault indicators and simulation of the entire process.

The solution

In order to optimize such a large and complex solution, a variety of products had to be integrated. Microsoft.Net was selected to develop the integration platform for the various products. Data for the models being optimized are stored in a SQL Server database. The data itself comes from measurements in the process, from operators and from previous optimizations. The optimization itself is performed in an equation solver, written in Fortrand due to performance. The code to verify data, create matrices suited for the equation solver and presenting and storing the solution to the datbase was written in c#. Around the on-line optimizer a number of tools were developed in order to create models of process units and configure the models according to the needs of Gruvön.

Most of these tools were based on Microsoft.Net but also Matlab were used. Anything specific for the solution at Gruvön is configurable or auto generated, which allows the solution to be easily adaptable to other complex issues needing optimization

e-man och .Net

e-man has developed the system on. NET platform for production solutions since its inception almost 10 years ago; By genuine experience from many different object-oriented development over the years, we have been able to apply our long experience in systems design and object orientation of Microsoft's new. Net platform. Our experience, know-how, we have compiled in our framework. A framework that is very pragmatic. By supporting the developer in all phases, from requirement collection, specification, architecture, implementation and testing framework provides a valuable support. The code becomes well documented, homogeneous, maintenance friendly and object-oriented.
